The fourth edition of the Emilio Gabba Lecture, with which the Collegio Nuovo continues to honor the figure of the illustrious Professor of Roman History, Academician of the Lincei and authoritative Advisor of the College for over thirty years. During this period, Prof. Gabba offered the students of the Nuovo, as well as the public of his admirers (literary scholars and historians, but not only), lessons in which, with a critical spirit, he linked the themes of the past to contemporaneity.
The dialogue around the book of Dario Mantovani (Invisible Literature: The Jurist Writers of Ancient Rome, published by Laterza in 2024 and previously published by the Société d'Édition Les Belles Lettres, Collège de France) will lead to a discussion, underlines the Author, «of the role that reflection on antiquity can play in the formation of a critical spirit and what challenges it faces in a society hungry for the future».
With him, the journalist and editor Margherita Marvulli (“Corriere della Sera” and Solferino Libri), author of an extensive review of the work which underlines the value of «shedding light on the partiality of the tradition on which one works» when speaking of the ancient world; Alessandro Maranesi, scholar of classics (with a doctorate in Roman Law) and Nicola Rizzo, jurist – both from the University of Pavia, where Aldo Travi, professor emeritus of the Catholic University of Milan and corresponding member, like Mantovani, of the Accademia dei Lincei for the class of Legal Sciences, also taught for about ten years.
The meeting will be held in person (Aula Magna del Collegio Nuovo, v. Abbiategrasso 404, Pavia) and remotely. Registration is required by March 18th for in-person participation; by March 19th, h. 18.30 for those who wish to connect remotely. The event will also be broadcast live on Facebook at @collegionuovopavia.
The initiative falls within the recognized training activities, subject to confirmation by the individual interested College member of the CCUM, and is recognized by the IUSS School as an extra-scope training activity.
