Refectory and Kitchen
When, at the opening of the Collegio Nuovo, Rectors of proven and long experience told me "Never forget that in a college it is very important that the students are happy with the food that is offered to them every day", that advice seemed a little reductive; today after 26 years, I propose it again in all its value. And alongside the students, guests and friends who shared their culture with us during the convivial meetings of the Collegio Nuovo.
Meal times are truly one of the most important in every community, the one in which the exchange of ideas and knowledge occurs most easily and spontaneously:
if the food is tasty and of good quality, the pleasure of being together increases further. And consequently also the cohesion between the guests.
Paola Bernardi, from Convivial meetings at the Collegio Nuovo, edited by Grazia Bruttocao, 2004
Students have meals in the refectory, but they can use also kitchenettes to prepare a coffee, a cake, a special dish; then, with the good weather, some small groups also move in the garden, which becomes also the privileged place of the annual gathering with the Alumnae!
The first Chef of the College, Gianni Antonelli, was asked if he remembers the first dinner in the College with the Founder. Here is his response:
How could I forget her! There was the Founder, Mrs. Mattei, a group of nine guests, including professors Aurelio Bernardi and Alberto Gigli-Berzolari, and six girls.
In the afternoon Mrs. Mattei comes to greet me and says: “Don't worry about the menu; look, I like spaghetti with tomato sauce, roast potatoes and shortcrust pastry.” The menu was done, of course, but I didn't have the equipment yet, so I prepared the shortcrust pastry in an aluminum pan. It turned out to be 5 centimeters thick!
College Library and Publications
A leap into the… Library, to study (and suggest the purchase of books)
A space within reach: around 10.000 volumes, arranged as an open stack library, which the collegiate community can access for internal consultation and borrow. In recent years the Library has become one of the favorite study spaces, thanks also to the surveillance service organized by the students themselves.
In addition to encyclopedias, dictionaries, manuals and reference works for both scientific and literary study, the Library has some important magazines ("Archeo", "Le Scienze", "Art e Dossier" ...). The section of Alumnae theses and publications edited by the College is also large; the part dedicated to the volumes written by the Alumnae, is increasing in both academic and fiction literature!
The Library is part of the "Catalogo Unico Pavese" (http://opac.unipv.it/) and is also accessible from "Biblioteche Pavia", the website of the library services of the provincial territory (http://www.biblioteche.pavia.it/).
The Library joins the University management system "Fluxus" for lending which is reserved for the Nuovo community. External users are allowed to consult the books on site, with the exception of degree theses (upon approval of the interested party), by making an appointment: biblioteca.collegionuovo@unipv.it
One of the qualifying features of the service is the possibility for students to suggest the purchase of books and magazines deemed useful for the entire community.

Gym and sports fields to keep fit: discover Sport at the Collegio Nuovo!
For training and sporting activities the collegiate community has a large and bright space at its disposal: a gym overlooking the greenery and equipped with covered sports fields (for basketball, volleyball and tennis) and also with stationary bicycle and treadmill. Not to mention the outdoor tennis courts and soccer fields, located on the collegiate campus, near the Graduate Residence. A stone's throw from the College, then, there are the new sports facilities of the University of Pavia, with swimming pools indoors and outdoors as well as a SPA.
In green and yellow uniforms, the volleyball, beach volleyball, five-a-side football and basketball teams of the Collegio Nuovo always provide great emotions, hitting one goal after another. Over the years they have also specialized in cross country e dragonboat.
They won several consecutive editions of the "Super Coppone", awarded since 1998 by the Rector of Pavia University during the inaugural ceremony of the academic sports year. The Colleges Trophy is a recognition to the team that obtains the best results in the intercollegiate tournaments of the various disciplines. The Collegio Nuovo is in first place in the Hall of Fame of CUS (Centro Universitario Sportivo - University Sports Centre, with 12 victories! Since the yellow-green team achieved their tenth title students have also organized the "Intercollegiate Coppone Festival" (the NewOlympics) in the gardens of the Collegio Nuovo: a moment to celebrate, also with the other collegiate teams from Pavia, competing in other kind of jokey challenges.
At the final sports events the Rector and the Secretary of the College never fail to join the great cheering. It is true that sport is also felt on more formal occasions:
“I have not missed any of the Italy-Germany matches broadcast on TV, starting with the Azteca match in 1970. Due to a set of circumstances that were difficult to control (no one could have predicted that Italy would reach the semi-final), the match against Germany of Euro 2012 coincides with the Collegio Nuovo Graduating Students' Dinner. In about twenty years, I have missed very few of these dinners [...] On the eve of the event, I telephone the Rector to find out if, by any chance, she was thinking of setting up a giant screen in the refectory. «We don't even talk about this. Choose: dinner or the game.» I choose dinner. Besides, I sleep in the Graduate Residence of the College and I fear some retaliation, like a big lizard in the bed. However, a few hours before the match, an email arrives from the Rector, announcing the presence of the giant screen in the refectory. Hurray! It seems that, after mine, there was a request from other, and much more authoritative, guests at the table."
