Monday 27 May 2024 (21pm) the Collegio Nuovo offers thanks to the Professor Stefano Caretti, curator of Complete works by Giacomo Matteotti, an opportunity to make known - or renew his memory - the figure of the socialist parliamentarian Giacomo Matteotti: his training and his intense political activity, also in the European context between Oxford, Paris, Berlin and Vienna, up to his influence which is embodied in an “idea that never dies”.
This year marks the centenary of his kidnapping and atrocious assassination (10 June 2024) "by His order", as we read, with a capital allusion to Benito Mussolini, in the memorandum of the head of the kidnappers, Amerigo Dumini.
A thesis that the prof. Caretti, in his volume written with the editorialist of the “Corriere della Sera” Marzio Breda (Mussolini's enemy. Giacomo Matteotti, story of a forgotten hero, Solferino, 2024), supports this by attributing the order for the assassination to mainly political reasons.
During the meeting a short excerpt from the documentary film will be screened Giacomo Matteotti, the idea that never dies born from extensive historical-scientific consultancy work by prof. Caretti.
A further sign to counter the repeated attempts at historical amnesia - if not open disfigurement of the memory - of a figure who, in his hostility to every form of totalitarianism - of the right and the left - found himself suffering amnesia and excommunication even in the ranks socialists and communists.
The meeting is held in person (Aula Magna of the Collegio Nuovo, v. Abbiategrasso 404, Pavia) and remotely. Registration is mandatory by May 26th for in-person participation; by May 27th, 18.30 pm for those who wish to connect remotely. The event is also broadcast live on Facebook on @collegionuovopavia.
The initiative is included, upon possible confirmation by the individual College concerned, member of the CCUM, among the recognized training activities. The meeting is accredited for IUSS students as part of the Extra-Class activities of the ordinary courses.
