After meetings with scientists such as Amalia Ercoli Finzi (and also with the astronaut Paolo Nespoli, in dialogue with Giovanni Bignami), on Wednesday 5 March 2025, at 9 pm at the Collegio Nuovo we will return to look at Space: with the scientific editorialist Giovanni Caprara(“Corriere della Sera”), who is also the Scientific Director of the Galileo Festival in Padua, we will retrace the reasons for space exploration – between science, technology and even dreams – and the opportunities offered by the “space economy”, since space has increasingly become a dimension of the economy, as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have also well understood.
Aerospace research has in fact produced technological solutions that have also found use in more traditional sectors, with the “conveniences” of GPS localization systems or weather forecasts. An example we carry in our pockets every day: the quality of images on our smartphones is also due to solutions that have revolutionized the world of space imaging, designed to meet the need to work in smaller environments.
Giovanni Caprara, passionate about space, is the author of several popular books on the subject (such as the most recent A Brief History of Space: Adventures and Discoveries of Men and Robots, published by Salani) which also underline the very respectable role played by our country, not only in the recent past.
The meeting with Giovanni Caprara, who will discuss the non-“demonstrative” reasons for returning to the Moon and going to Mars, comes two days after the inauguration of the first edition of the Transversal Skills Laboratory “Scientific Information: Correct and Necessary” held by him and promoted by Collegio Nuovo as part of the project with “Università nei Collegi” launched by the University of Pavia.
The meeting will be held in person (Aula Magna del Collegio Nuovo, v. Abbiategrasso 404, Pavia) and remotely. Registration is required by March 4th for in-person participation; by March 5th, 6.30 pm for those who wish to connect remotely. The event will also be broadcast live on Facebook at @collegionuovopavia.
The initiative falls within the recognized training activities, subject to confirmation by the individual interested College member of the CCUM, and is recognized by the IUSS School as an extra-scope training activity.
