October 10th 2017, 9 pm - Meeting with Alumna BARBARA CASADEI PRESIDENT ELECT EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF CARDIOLOGY Barbara Casadei, one of the first students to be admitted to the Collegio Nuovo in its foundation year (1978) is now President Elect in the Board of the European Society of Cardiology, which represents over 95,000 cardiologists and is affiliated with over forty societies outside Europe. She is the first woman to cover this position: in 2006 she became the first and only Full Professor (woman) in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford. Among her major contributions, she highlighted recent work on the role of microRNA-31 in begetting human atrial fibrillation (2016, "Science Traslational Medicine"). This discovery provides more effective therapeutic solutions in treating this cardiac arrhythmia.
Graduated at the University of Pavia and specialized in Cardiology with Prof. Achille Venco, Barbara left for Oxford in 1989 with a postgraduate scholarship by Collegio Nuovo for further studies in arterial hypertension at the John Radcliffe Hospital. In 1998 she was awarded the “Medaglia Teresiana” by the University of Pavia and she served as President of the Collegio Nuovo Alumnae Association.
